Hard water contains elevated levels of dissolved calcium and magnesium. It develops as water moves through mineral-rich soil and rock before entering groundwater, wells and household supply systems.
It is especially relevant where homes rely on groundwater or borewells, but hardness can vary between cities, neighbourhoods and water sources in the same building.
